

Beryl DeSouza Lyte Johnson passed away at her home in West Pembroke
Pines, Florida, on the afternoon of October 4 th, 2024 at age 92. She was
attended by her daughter and her companion at the time of her passing.
Beryl Johnson was born on October 18 th,1931 at Airy Hall, Mahaicony,
Guyana. Her father, James DeSouza, was a traveling salesman, and her
mother, Ratne Mohabir, was a sugar cane worker. In March 1950, Beryl married
William Randolph Lyte of Linden, Guyana, and on May 21 st, 1969 she married
Roy Winston Johnson of Georgetown, Guyana. Beryl embraced life with a spirit
of entrepreneurship and creativity, sewing exquisite wedding dresses and
baking delightful pastries for her friends and neighbors. Beryl and Roy
emigrated to the United States in 1976, where they pursued their dream of
entrepreneurship. In 1981, they established the Guyana Roti House in
Brooklyn, New York—a pioneering restaurant offering Guyanese-Indian cuisine.
Featured in the New York Post, the restaurant was a testament to her culinary
skills and business acumen. Despite her professional achievements, Beryl
considered her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to be her
greatest accomplishment.
Beryl’s intelligence, wit, and business prowess made her the cornerstone of her
family, both immediate and extended. After retiring from the restaurant business
at age 65, she moved to Florida, where she enjoyed her golden years
surrounded by loved ones. Renowned for her kindness and generosity, Beryl left
an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Beryl is preceded in death by James DeSouza, Ratne Mohabir, Edith
DeSouza, Ruby DeSouza, Edward DeSouza, Cecil DeSouza, Agnes
DeSouza, Roy Winston Johnson, and Clarice Joannah Johnson.
Beryl is survived by her children: Leslie Hing, Randolph Michael Lyte-Johnson,
Joanie Johnson M.S., Guy Mortimer St. Clair Johnson, Deborah Alexis Guilbaud,
M.D., Shemroy Montgomery Johnson and their respective spouses Bernadette
Eleanor Johnson M.A.Ed., Hugh Heyward, Gail Ann Johnson, and Doris Jean
Johnson. Her stepchildren: Earle Lovell and his spouse Joan Lovell and their
daughter Stephanie; Dawn Alexander, Gayle Johnson, and Kim Johnson. Her
grandchildren: Leroy Skeete Jr, Jason Randolph Johnson M.S.N., Lauren
Eleanor Johnson, J.D., Leeann Abigail Johnson, Joshua Aaron Johnson, Dexter
Michael Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Guion Johnson, Andray Johnson, Sherita
Alexis Johnson, Adrienne Alexis Guilbaud, Krystle Alexis Johnson, M.D. and her
spouse Joshua McHugh M.D., Linea Zareena Johnson and her spouse Ronald
Griswell; Imani Zareena Johnson, Jelani Shem Johnson, Amina Alexis
Johnson, Denzel Roy Johnson, and Rex Joseph Johnson. Her
great-grandchildren Kyra Skeete, Kyndel Skeete, Christian McHugh, and Levi
Johnson Griswell. Her sisters Ruby Roberts, Veronica Angil Jones, and
Elizabeth Yensen.
Viewing will be from 7 PM to 9 PM on Friday evening, October 18 th, 2024 at
Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home at 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida 33024.
Funeral services and Cremation will follow at Fred Hunter’s Funeral Cemeteries
and Crematory at 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida 33024 from 10 PM to 12
PM on Saturday morning, October 19 th, 2024.

Beryl DeSouza Lyte Johnson will fondly be remembered as a beautiful,
generous, and thoughtful woman who selflessly gave to those she loved. Her
hard work, dedication, and zest for life will be cherished by her family and
friends forever.
