Cecelia (“Ceil” or “Cela”) Dupuy Mooney died on Friday, July 31, 2020. She was born on April 24, 1936, in Plaquemine, LA and moved to New Orleans at age 12. Ceil graduated high school from Ursuline Academy of New Orleans and received a bachelor’s degree from LSU, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She began her graduate studies at the Tulane University School of Social Work and received her MSW from the Barry University School of Social Work.
Ceil started working at the North Miami Public Library in the 1980’s and worked there for well over 10 years. She was a lifelong learner and avid reader who had a sense of wonderment and joy about art, music, and theater. She and her husband Jim made several trips to Europe and other places in and outside the U.S. Eventually Ceil went back to school and earned a certificate in Spiritual Direction from St. Thomas University. She also helped start the Centering Prayer group at St. David’s Catholic Church in Davie, FL.
Ceil’s faith and spirituality transcended the boundaries of traditional religion and allowed her to see the divine presence in everyone. Through her work as a spiritual director, she counseled numerous people over the years who sought her knowledge, experience, and guidance. Her unique ability to listen and empathize created a sense of trust and caring reflected in all her relationships.
Ceil is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, James Mooney of Davie, FL; children Tom Mooney (Gilda), Ginger Moskowitz, and Emily Mooney. Beloved grandmother to Jacob and Dylan Moskowitz and James Mooney. Beloved aunt to George Dupuy, Elizabeth Dupuy, Leslie Dupuy, and James Mooney.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Colquitt Omer Dupuy and Cecelia Virginia Rhorer; brothers Colquitt Dupuy, Edward Larry Dupuy, and John Dupuy; and sisters Constance Dupuy, Mary Edith Dupuy, and Virginia Dupuy. Her brother James Dupuy recently followed her in death.
Ceil was an incredible person, mentor, friend, and person of faith who her husband and children were blessed to have in their life.
In remembrance of Ceil’s life, the family requests donations be made to the Hope Outreach Center in Davie, FL.
