Sgt. David Wayne Freeman, a 48-year resident of Broward County, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at home; he was 65 years old. As a teen, David moved from California to Florida with his parents, arriving in Pembroke Pines in 1977. David attended Cooper City High School, graduating in 1978. He went on to attend the Police Academy in Broward County and after completion began his career as a Police Officer with Pembroke Pines Police Department, moving on to the Coconut Creek Police Department in 1986, and serving that community for 29 years. David received recognition throughout his career for his exemplary dedication to service.
David spent his childhood, along with his four siblings, relocating often to accommodate their father, Major Donald Gene Freeman’s career as a pilot in the U. S. Air Force. The family was transferred to numerous bases across the U. S. including the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Seattle, Washington, Dayton, Ohio and Los Angeles, California. He benefitted from these many experiences, becoming a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, a devotion he lovingly shared with his mother.
David had a warm heart towards the animals in his care which revealed an endearing gentle side, and was a car enthusiast with particular interest in Corvettes.
His father, along with his beloved mother Loretta “Susie” (Gillum) and his two older siblings, John and Doug were stationed at Homestead, AFB in 1960. On the 18th of May that year, Susie and Don joyously welcomed two beautiful twin boys, David Wayne and Mark Stewart. Like David, Mark served his community as a BSO Fire Rescue Lieutenant before his untimely passing in 2006, a life tragedy that challenged David deeply. To honor their late parents’ wish, David will be laid to rest alongside his brother Mark.
David’s greatest loves in life were his two wonderful sons, Joshua and Jonathon of whom he was very proud. David will be greatly missed by his sons and the Davis family, his brothers John & Douglas, sister Donna, his beloved Aunt Harriet and Uncle Bobby of Lexington, Kentucky, Aunt Doris and family of New Carlisle, Ohio, his Aunt Linda of Florida, the Freeze family of California, his numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and the many friends and colleagues he knew throughout his life.
To honor David’s life and legacy, a graveside service will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Fred Hunter’s Memorial Gardens East.
