George Henry McLarty was born on March 13, 1935 in Kingston , Jamaica to Gwendolyn McLarty. George spent his formative years with his family going between Kingston and his beloved Port Royal. “Kingston Georgie” as he was affectionately called, was known for his movie star looks, his easy-going nature and his athleticism on the soccer field. In 1956 George migrated to England where he soon gained employment on a ship. George learned various trades while working on the ship and he travelled to such places as Panama and Cuba to name a few.
In 1958 George married his wife Yvonne Bryan. After his marriage to Yvonne (who preceded him in death), George continued to perfect his trade as a Master Metal Polisher. George and Yvonne raised their two sons Lloyd (who preceded George in death) and Howard (Jim) in Bristol until 1966. In Bristol, George made a name for himself as a popular Cricket allrounder on teams such as the B.C. U.K. Exiles and Montpelier. While a member of the B.C.U.K Exiles, George as a 25 year-old fast bowler, performed a hat-trick five times during his three years with the team. George’s talent as a Cricket player was often recognized in local newspapers. In 1966 George and Yvonne migrated to the United States. In 1969 Yvonne gave birth to their daughter Joan and shortly after George and Yvonne relocated their family (with their sons, George’s mother Gwen and his mother-in-law Sylvia along with Ken her husband) to Queens, New York. In New York, George began a new career painting cars and installing sunroofs.
In 1979 George and Yvonne relocated with Joan and his mother Gwen to Florida. Avery, George and Yvonne’s bonus son, came to live with the family during this time. In Florida George returned to his work as a Master Metal Polisher working for the company Stainless. In 2002 George decided to retire and became a full-time grandfather a role he enjoyed until his final days. During his retirement George could often be found enjoying Cricket matches with his “old boys” and watching his grandchildren play soccer or run track. George or “Pops” as the soccer community called him was a welcomed sideline coach whose voice of experience and knowledge of the game of soccer impressed all that came in to contact with him.
George resided with his daughter and her family for the five years following the death of his beloved wife Yvonne. George was an integral part of the McLarty/Pierre-Jerome household and the center of the life of his grandchildren Milan, Sebastian and Adrian. George was called to his eternal rest on the evening of July 27, 2021. He is survived by his son Jim and his wife Ayumi, his daughter Joan and her husband Reginald, and his nephew Avery and his wife Safiya.
