Hazel pursued her love of caring for people, studying nursing and midwifery at Queens College in England. After becoming a registered nurse, she traveled to New York and worked at Bronx- Lebanon Hospital. Recognizing her strong work ethic, the hospital quickly promoted her to Supervisor of the Children's Ward.
In New York, Hazel attended Grace Gospel Chapel. After a fellowship service, she was introduced to Sydney Johnson, and it was love at first sight. They were married on July 11, 1962.
After the family relocated to South Florida, Hazel became a member of Hollywood Bible Chapel where she was very active in the nursery. She had an undeniable love for the Lord's work and always encouraged young people to get a good education and put God first in their lives. Her favorite verse was Proverbs 3:5-6.
Hazel's commitment to caring for others continued at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Miami where she worked as a nurse for 35 years.
When Hazel was not working, she pursued one of her other passions: traveling. Over the years, she visited Europe, Canada, Israel, and various islands in the Caribbean. In her later years, she slowed down a little preferring long drives along the beach. But above all other pursuits, Hazel enjoyed spending time with her family.
The Lord called Hazel home on Saturday, August 22, 2015. She is preceded in death by her parents Joselyn and Mittybell Kelly. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Sydney Johnson; her daughters, Annette Johnson and Ruth Johnson; her son, Sydney Johnson Jr. and daughter-in-law, Hellen Johnson; her grandchildren, Zachary Johnson and Joshua Johnson; her sister, Diana Kelly; her brother, Harvey Kelly and sister-in-law, Sylvia Kelly; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
