Jean is survived by her siblings, Joyce, Janet, Judy and Jack, as well as her children Debbie, Cathy, Chris, Patsy and Jimmy. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Charles (Buddy), her brother Jimmy and her parents Hilda and James Raleigh.
Jean was born on February 1st, 1932 in Washington D.C. to Hilda and James Raleigh. She graduated from Bladensburg High School in Prince George's County in 1950. She married Buddy Parker, her high school sweetheart in 1952. After marriage, Buddy joined the Marines and served two years, then worked in the produce department at Safeway Grocery Store. After working there for a few years, Buddy began a job with Pepco working as an underground cable splicer. When Jean was a teenager, she worked at a drug store in Washington D.C.. Then, she was a homemaker and raised all five of her children. When her youngest daughter went to high school, she became a bookkeeper at National Top and Glass. Finally, Jean worked as a customer service representative at The Rag Shop Craft Store. Over a period of seventeen years, the couple welcomed five beautiful children into their lives. Jean loved and cared for them, as well as provided for them for the length of their childhood. Her children remember her as sweet, compassionate, and kind. She encouraged them to live their lives with love, understanding and acceptance.
She took care of her grandkids and watched over them when needed. She was often a shoulder to cry on and a source of unconditional love. After forty-five years of marriage to her beloved Buddy, Jean joined the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church. During that time, she made well over one hundred prayer shawls to donate to the church and those who truly needed them. Over the period of twenty years, Jean welcomed eight grandchildren, Mandy, Melissa, Scotty, Steven, Amber, Ashley, Zak and Sarah. Then, over the period of twenty-three years, she welcomed nine great-grandchildren, Jacob, Josh, Eli, Grace, Olivia, Chloe, Sawyer, Luke and Ruby.
The funeral service is scheduled for January 11th, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church with a 12 noon viewing and a 1pm service. A "celebration of life" lunch will follow. Pastor Bedenbaugh will officiate, Graveside Service with Final Rest at Fred Hunter's Memorial Gardens North immediately following the celebration of life. All are welcome to attend and enjoy the remembrance of Jean's life, with reception and fellowship. In recognition of Jean's service to the Prayer Shawl Ministry, in lieu of flowers Jean's family has asked that donations be made to the Trinity Memorial fund. The funds will be used to benefit the church where there is need.
