Varela, Joan Elizabeth, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Joan was born on June 9, 1934 in New York City. Joan worked for Pan American Airways for 16 years. After retiring from Pan Am, she spent the next 19 years in customer service for Wal-Mart, before retiring in April, 2012. Joan will be greatly missed by her loving daughters, Laura Varela and Linda Anderson, her son-in-law Darryl Anderson, grandson, Brennen, sister, Janet Murtha, her husband Richard, brothers James and Tommy, extended family of Francine, Ricky and Manny Varela, and her Pam Am "family" both home and abroad. Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Manuel Varela, and parents James and Grace Murtha. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 2401 S. University Drive, Davie FL at noon on March 25, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
