The book of life of our beloved John Evans McCall Jr., opened on September 5, 1951. On that day, John was one of four children born to the late John E. McCall, Sr., and Nelly T. McCall in Wadesboro, North Carolina. John, who was affectionately known to family and friends as "Chip", was introduced to Christ early in life and was baptized on August 25, 1963 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church in Cheraw, South Carolina.
John was educated in the Cheraw area public schools system. He attended Cheraw High School where he was active in football, basketball, and track & field, and was a member of the graduating class of 1969. Upon high school graduation, John accepted a basketball scholarship to Morris College, an historically black, liberal arts college in Sumter, South Carolina. However, after suffering a sports related injury, John retired from his college basketball career during his Freshman year. John went on to graduate from Morris College in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. After graduating, John remained at Morris College where he accepted a position as an Admissions Recruiter and encouraged countless students to attend college. While employed at Morris College, John pledged membership to the Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, in 1984.
In 1989, John moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he accepted a teaching position at Cooper City High School, and remained for the next 23 years, until his passing. While at Cooper City High, John taught Economics and American Government to 12th graders, served as Social Studies Department Head and was head coach for the Girls Basketball and Boys Tennis teams. A passionate and devoted educator, John was recognized as Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. A lifelong learner, in 2003, John received a Master's of Science Degree from Nova Southeastern University.
In 1996, John met Tiwanna Johnson and they later married in 1997. In 2000, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Amanda McCall. In his spare time, John enjoyed playing golf and motivating students to strive for academic excellence. On the evening of February 21, 2012, God called John to his eternal home, and the final chapter in the book of his life was complete. John will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, caring father, cherished family member and committed educator.
John leaves to cherish his memory: Wife, Tiwanna Johnson-McCall; Daughters, Sheri McCall, Jameelah Faruk, Cortney Johnson and Amanda McCall; Son, Troy Faruk; Sister, Brenda McCall (Tommy/ Fort Lauderdale, Florida); Brothers, Wayne McCall (Deborah/Boyds, Maryland) and Bryan McCall (Linda/ Frt Lauderdale, Florida), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, co-workers and students.
