Lowell Edward Lowe was born at home on January 24, 1934, in Nassau, Bahamas. He was the fifth child of the seven children born to Fanny and Clerihew Lowe. As a young child he acquired the nickname Buddy, and has been known by that name ever since. He was named Lowell after the radio personality Lowell Thomas, but as he often explained, Lowell Lowe is a confusing name, so he preferred to go by Buddy.
Growing up on the island of Nassau, Buddy enjoyed a childhood filled with swimming and boating with friends, and family picnics at the beach. At age four Buddy began attending a Methodist school called Queens College, and continued his education at the same school through high school graduation. Then he began working in the bookkeeping department of a convenience store company called Eleuthera Limited. He continued his career doing accounting work for a couple other companies in Nassau, including the family business, Lowes Pipe and Steel. After he moved to Florida he worked in the real estate business.
Buddy grew up in a Christian family. They attended services at a Brethren assembly every Sunday. At age 22 Buddy accepted Christ as his personal Savior after attending a series of evangelistic meetings conducted by visiting Scottish evangelist Bill Paterson. The night Buddy was saved Bill Paterson preached on the verse John 1:12But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.
Soon after he was saved Buddy started dating Jettie Key. Buddy and Jettie were married on June 30, 1957. They wanted to have a home rather than just a decorated house, and hearty laughter blessed their home. Four children were born to themJane, Nancy, Susan, and David. The family attended Shirley Heights Gospel Chapel, where Buddy taught Sunday School.
In 1973 Buddy, Jettie, and their four children moved to Hollywood, Florida. They began attending Hollywood Bible Chapel. Buddy has been involved in various capacities with Hollywood Chapel over the yearsas Sunday School teacher, deacon, and most recently, as an elder. He also served for some years as Treasurer of the South Florida Missionary Class.
Three and a half years ago Buddy was diagnosed with cancer. Between rounds of chemotherapy and radiation he was still able to enjoy some happy times with family and friends. However, in May of this year his condition began to worsen considerably. On Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 2am, Buddy peacefully took his last breath on this earth, and began his new life in Heaven. He and his family deeply appreciated all the care he received during his illness from so many wonderful medical personnel.
Buddy was a loving and devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife Jettie; three daughters, Jane Lowe, Nancy Key, and Susan Coppolella; one son, David Lowe; two sons-in-law, Steven Key and David Coppolella; and one daughter-in-law, Loretta Lowe. He enjoyed being a grandfather to his seven grandsons Daniel Wilkes; Joshua, James, and Jonathan Key; DJ Lowe; and Kaden and Kyle Coppolella. He is also survived by one brother, Emory Lowe; three sisters, Natalie Saunders, Joy Jossi, and Grace Pinder; sisters-in-law Betty Lowe, Sadie Lowe, and Merle Key; and brothers-in-law Al Jossi and Lyman Pinder; many nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. He was pre-deceased by his brother Gilbert Lowe and sister Margaret Jannsen; and brothers-in-law Donald Saunders, Jack Jannsen, and Berlin Key. His friendly smile and quick wit will be missed by all who knew him, but we rejoice that he is with the Lord, which is far better.
