She was the second child of Ranford and Daisy Dawkins. Madeline was known fondly as “Annie” growing up; although the exact origin of who gave her that pet name, and why, is a family mystery!
She attended Porus primary school and high school. She had a quiet personality and was well liked by her teachers and schoolmates. Annie was a nurturer from an early age and throughout her lifetime.
After graduation, Annie became a local seamstress. Although quiet, she was known for her stylish clothing with bold colors and patterns and often made clothes for family and friends.
In 1965, she emigrated to the United States with her parents. She briefly returned to Kingston, Jamaica to marry her longtime companion and the love of her life Albert Leopold Smith (Jimmy). Jimmy followed her to the U.S. where they were longtime residents of New Rochelle, NY.
Their home in New Rochelle quickly became a central meeting place for family gatherings. Annie enjoyed hosting parties, crocheting, embroidery and traveling throughout the Caribbean. She was a true animal lover and especially loved cats and dogs.
In NY, she studied nursing and worked at Center Manor and Sarah Neuman nursing homes for several years. In the early-80’s she relocated to Hollywood and the warmer climate of South Florida.
Annie had an entrepreneurial spirit and opened her own nursing home in Hollywood, Florida where she took care of the elderly. She touched the lives of many families and colleagues, too numerous to mention, with her caring spirit and big smile.
Annie’s parents, husband, sister Louise, brothers Joseph and Richard (Breada) preceded her in death. She leaves behind her sisters Lolita Stephens (Poodie), Carmen Folkes (Dandy), Barbara Myles (Babsie); sister in laws Gloria, Jean, Marva; several nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends.
Annie will be dearly missed. May her soul rest in peace.
