Maria Elvira Cushing

After growing up and spending her young adulthood in El Salvador, Maria began her journey to becoming a United States citizen, while bringing her sons, Jimmy and Rudy Martinez with her.  This is where she met Ralph Smades, and together they had her daughter Michelle... Maria also became a stepmother to Mark Smades.

Years later Maria met the man she would be married to for the last 30 years of her life...Scott Cushing.  Maria and Scott had much in common, but most of all was the Moose Lodge.  Both Scott and Maria held various titles over the years and Maria in particular was always available for fundraisers and any type of volunteering...she was simply the best at any type of fundraising.  Maria was a kindhearted, caring woman and anytime she could help others she did.  She will be remembered for her boldness, courage and dedication to her friends and family.

Maria is survived by her husband Scott Cushing, son Rudy Martinez, daughter-in-law Sue Martinez, daughter Michelle Corey, son-in-law George Corey, stepson Mark Smades, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

There will be a Remembrance service for Maria on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 6 PM to 9 PM at Fred Hunter funeral home located at

6301 Taft St., Hollywood, FL 33024
