Patrick Kenneth Mason, 63, son of John Francis Mason and Mary Theresa Pappalardo took his last breath at home in the presence of his loving and devoted wife, Lorraine Dawn (Palka) Mason and daughters Sara (Mason) Anton and Kayla Mason at 12:40 AM Jan 9, 2014. He is also survived by son in law Paul Anton and grandson Nathan Anton and sister in law Iris Engel.
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts at 11:55 PM on St. Patrick's Day (March 17), 1950 his mother felt it a sign that his name be Patrick. He was the third child of four. He is survived by loving sister Carolyn (Mason) Desrochers and husband Ronald of Methuen, Mass and nephews Stephen and Kevin; brother John Michael Mason from New Hampshire and younger sister Kathleen Mason (pre-deceased in 2001) and nieces Jillian and Alexandria Capello and nephew Jay Capello from Mass.
Pat graduated from Lawrence Technical School with a high school diploma/certification in Culinary Arts. He worked as a baker in a dual enrollment program throughout high school. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army. He served one year in Vietnam. The VA recognizes Pancreatic Cancer as a direct link to Agent Orange, therefore affirming that he gave his life for his country. He was proud of his service but refused the honor of being called a hero. In his words, "I'm just a regular guy who tried to do his best in everything I did. I tried to treat people equally and honestly and respectfully."
The years following the army were years of confusion and trying to find himself. Then on the fateful date of June 17, 1977, he met the love of his life. They married in April 1979. They shared a rare and special life together; they raised their two girls and were looking forward to retirement.
Pat started working for the City of Pembroke Pines in 1980 as an auto technician. He was known for his integrity and was respected by city employees and police officers for his willingness to help. His wife affectionately describes him as "My big strong man, my sweet, sweet Pat with his wild and curly unruly hair, his twinkling laughing green eyes that entranced me from the moment we met."
Pat fought the cancer bravely for 7 months until finally his body could take no more. He will be very sorely missed. Rest in Peace Pat, you just didn't realize how many people loved you!
Pat will be cremated by Fred Hunter Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Friday evening at 7:00pm at Luther Memorial 1925 North State Road 7, Hollywood, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations to the research of Pancreatic Cancer would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully someday they will find a cure and spare those afflicted from the horrible suffering it causes.
