
Smith, Randolph Calvin, Jr., ("Cal") of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, died April 15, 2012. He was born in Torrington, CT, the son of Randolph C. Smith Sr. and Edith Plaskett Smith. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Gelormino Smith; two sons, Jeffrey Brian (Drew) Smith of Fort Lauderdale and Randolph Calvin Smith, III, of Rhode Island and four grandchildren: Christina Smith and Matthew Smith, of Colchester, CT, and Elizabeth Joy Smith and Catherine Ann Smith of Fort Lauderdale. He is also survived by his brother, Donald A. Smith of Harwinton, CT; his sister, Marjorie Smith Olson of Collinsville, CT. Cal was a graduate of the Harwinton, CT elementary school system in 1948 and Torrington High School in 1952, where he was captain of the football team. In 1956, he received a BS degree in business administration from Syracuse University, where he was a stating lineman on the varsity football team for three years during the Jim Brown era. Upon graduation from Syracuse he also received a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He reported for duty in the Air Force that summer and received a disability retirement the following year after a year of hospitalization for a service connected disability. In 1961, he earned his law degree at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, FL and was admitted to the bar in Florida and Connecticut. He had the honor of serving as a law clerk for Justice Howard Alcorn on the Connecticut Supreme Court during his first year as an attorney. He then engaged in the private practice of law in Torrington, CT for five years before becoming employed by Combustion Engineering, Inc., where he ultimately served as Vice President and Associate General Counsel until his retirement. Following his retirement, he was active in the affairs of the Fort Lauderdale condominium where he and his wife lived, serving many years on its governing board and three terms as its president. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Family will receive friends on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 2 to 4 pm at Fred Hunter's Downtown Ft. Lauderdale Chapel.
