

Roy Franklin Campbell, 80, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Sammye Campbell, three devoted daughters, Gwen Wheeler (Steve) of Goode, VA; Teri Papademetriou of Glen Arm, MD; and Lisa Shaffer (Dean) of Land OLakes, FL; Grandsons Kris Wheeler (Christina) of Mechanicsburg, VA; Bart Wheeler of Richmond, VA; Granddaughters Ali and Sia Papademetriou; two great grandchildren Baby Lucas Wheeler and Lydia Papademetriou. Brother Norman Campbell, Grandson Kevin Campbell Auchter, and son-in-law Jim Papademetriou preceded Roy in death.
Roy was born in Stanaford, West Virginia to loving parents Ursula and Herbert Campbell on May 14, 1931. Roy and Sammye moved to Florida in 1955 where he became Science Department Head at Stranahan High School. He served 13 years as Director of Science for Broward County Schools. Upon receiving his Educational Doctorate (University of Florida) in 1972, he became Principal at Nova High School. He was Principal of two Elementary Schools: Westwood Heights and Harbordale, retiring in 1989 after 36 years of service to the Broward County School system.
Roy was in various local organizations, including Broward County Singing Elementary School Principals, YMCA, Fellowship of Christian School Administrators and Foster Grandparents/Senior Companions.
Throughout his life he was an active churchman. Roy served as Elder at First Christian Church of Ft. Lauderdale and Parkway Christian where he was honored as Elder Emeritus. He became a Lay Minister in 1992 and was ordained to ministry by the Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Florida in 1997. He served as minister of Faith Christian Church in Hollywood, FL from 1992-2000.
Truly a man for all seasons, Roy loved lobster diving, water and snow skiing, golf, and bowling with friends and family. His gentle spirit and kind heart touched the lives of all who knew him.
Viewing will be held on Wednesday, November 9 from 6 to 8 pm at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 718 S. Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale, A Funeral Service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, November 10 with a viewing from 12 pm to 1 pm at First Christian Church, 201 SE 13th St., Ft. Lauderdale. Interment will follow at the historic Evergreen Cemetery 1300 SE 10th Ave. in Ft. Lauderdale.
