July 8, 1923, Calhoun, GA - Summerville, SC, June 15, 2019
William H Kirkley is survived by his immediate family: wife of 22 years, Mary Jo Kirkley, his three children Bill, Anne and Lynne. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Leighton Peebles Kirkley.
Dr Kirkley was a graduate of Emory University of Medicine and later served in the US Army. In 1953 he moved his family to Ft Lauderdale and established his medical practice specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. He was a member of the Broward General Hospital community and for over 40 years he cared for his patients: delivering countless babies and counseling their families.
He was engaged both personally and through civic initiatives that shaped Ft Lauderdale. He generously gave of his time and resources to the Ft Lauderdale Lions Club. He was also a member of Park Temple Methodist Church and the Lauderdale Yacht Club.
Bill Kirkley believed in the importance of education. He was dedicated to ongoing professional development as well as helping others join the medical community.
He served as president of the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1982. During his tenure he organized and conducted professional meetings for other physicians in his field, bringing together research findings and experts to discuss current diagnostic and treatment modalities.
Dr Kirkley understood that the medical profession to which he was dedicated is critically challenged. More opportunities for young people to pursue medical careers are needed. To this end, he donated the necessary resources to send two young men to medical school, complete their residencies, and allow them to open practices in their chosen communities.
William Kirkley was a longtime resident of Ft Lauderdale. He will be remembered for his many good works, and greatly missed by his family and friends.
As he wished, there will be no service on his behalf. He will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery.
