Alda Ruth Morris Umphrey

Alda Ruth Morris Umphrey was born May 15, 1923 in Madison County and died May 24, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Artist Gene Umphrey; parents, Thomas Jefferson and Annie Odell Little Morris; her two brothers, James and Frank; and three sisters, Marjorie, Evelyn, and Gussie. Alda Ruth is survived by her son Thomas E. Umphrey (Kay), grandchildren Heidi Umphrey (Kevin LaCasse), Thomas E. Umphrey, Jr., Libby Holmes (Phil) and great grandchildren Noah Thomas, Annalise and Maxmartin Holmes.

Alda Ruth graduated Riverton High School in Madison County where she played basketball. She worked her way through Berea College and completed a master’s degree in education from the University of Alabama. She taught in Jefferson and Madison Counties, Tarrant Elementary School and Woodlawn High School. She worked as a dietician at University Hospital. She was devoted to educating the young people of Alabama.

There will be a graveside service for Mrs. Umphrey, Tuesday, May 27,2014 at 3:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, AL. A time of visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel.
