Ann Barcroft Hicks of Mountain Brook, Alabama died peacefully on December 28, 2020, two days before her 89th birthday. Ann was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Edith Barcroft, her brother Paul Barcroft Jr., and her husband Dr. Julius N. “Buddy” Hicks. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Bryant, her son, Jim Hicks (Jill) and daughter Barbara Lummis (Greg) as well as her grandchildren Charlie (Elle) and Mitchell Bryant, Michael, Taylor, and Katie Lummis, Sophie Hicks, and her great grandson, Clive Bryant. She was devoted to her family, the UAB community and the community at large. As a “tennis mom”, her home, heart and kitchen were always open to young players. She was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church where she used her kind heart and creativity to help create the Chrismon and Egg Trees still used today. As a member of the Canterbury Knit Whits, Ann used her knitting skills to help make thousands of prayer shawls and hats for the UAB newborn follow up clinic. She worked with The Birmingham Museum of Art to restore and repair their lace collection. Many heirloom wedding veils and christening dresses were repaired and preserved under her watchful eye. As a physician’s wife, she enjoyed traveling to medical conferences, encouraging young medical students, and ensuring everyone knew the strength of the UAB School of Medicine. She was a member of the Treemont Garden Club, The Country Club of Birmingham, the Birmingham Art Museum, the Saturday Women’s Bridge Group, the lunch time Knitting Group, and the 5 o’clock Literary Club. Her compassionate, kind heart and her infectious positive attitude will be missed by many. There will be an immediate family only service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 9, 2021. Friends may view via streaming at canterburyumc.org. At 1:00 PM, the church will hold a drive thru visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Susan Norton Hicks Memorial Fund. Please make checks payable to UAB Otolaryngology and mail to UAB Department of Otolaryngology, 1720 2nd Avenue South, FOT 1155, Birmingham, AL 35294-3412.
