Dr. Anthony 'Tony' Shelley Meyer, passed away on April 20, 2023 at home in Birmingham, AL. He was born on December 22, 1947 in St. Augustine, Florida a son to the late Leo Herbert Meyer and Mary Elizabeth Shelley. He was a descendent of the first Minorcans of Spain who settled in St. Augustine, FL. Tony was a loving husband, uncle and friend. He had many accomplishments and diverse interests throughout his life, including an education at Loyola University, New Orleans, University of Rochester Research Division in New York City, and graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicine, before taking a permanent Physician's position in Emergency Medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital (UAB Hospital). On sabbaticals he led extensive Bird Watching Tours, visited almost every continent of the world, and climbed to Mt. Everest Base Camp twice with both local friends and friends in the wine industry. Tony first opened Classic Wine Company in downtown Homewood, AL to pursue his passion and knowledge of wine. During the course of owning Classic Wine Company, he participated in the TumTum Tree Foundation's Wine Auction. He also was a member of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Chapter in New Orleans. Tony loved being a Florida Gator, staying close to his University of Florida friends with their continued support throughout his life, and being a New York Yankee Baseball Fan. He loved collaborating with his friends of The Tuesday Night Group, The Barolo Boys, and many other friendships from food and wine entities in Birmingham, New Orleans, California, Oregon, and France. Above all he loved sharing his private time with his wife Jennifer and their cats, and in their love together of visiting beautiful landscapes, being around nature, wildlife, and studying their ancestry together.
Tony is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, of nearly 17 years of marriage, Jennifer S. Cross, their cat Puff, brother Andrew Meyer, and sister-in-law Patricia, Pennsylvania, nephew Paul, niece Victoria, and numerous cousins throughout Florida, including his very dear Aunt Dorothy Shelley, Daytona Beach, and his first cousins John Shelley, Dennis Shelley, Daytona Beach, and Mark Shelley, St. Augustine FL. Mother-in-law Jeani Stull Cross, sisters-in-law, Candice Cross, Tennessee, and Natalie Cross Dumrongkietiman, and her husband Vince Dumrongkietiman, West Virginia, with his nieces, Kaya Ellis, North Carolina, Sophie, Lainey and Keira Dumrongkietiman, West Virginia.
A very special loving thanks to Anne McIntyre, The Villages, FL, Dr. Bill Huggins, Birmingham, AL, and Jim Kersey, Seattle, Washington for the loving support shown to Tony and Jennifer in the recent times.
