

He was born February 12, 1921, in the Bronx, New York City, New York. He and his family moved from New York to Birmingham in 1935. He graduated from Phillips High School in 1939. He then attended Birmingham Southern College until World War II and D-Day. Baldo then enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 as an Infantryman in the 36th Infantry Division. He was a decorated combat veteran. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation and 3 Battle Stars for heroism in Alsace Lorraine, France. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to Birmingham Southern College and graduated with a BS degree in Chemistry in 1948.
He met the love of his life, Marie Pizzitola, and they were married in 1949.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years and his 4 children- Rose Marie Butler (Terry); Jack (Melinda); Joe; Terese Bass (Craig). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Rose (Simonitti) DiBenedetto and his brother Gildo.
Baldo worked as an Analytical Chemist for Pittsburg Testing Laboratory for 40 years. He then worked for PSI for 10 years. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sons of Italy, Roma Club, and Hoover Senior Center. Baldo always enjoyed reading, political discussions, and a game of poker.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hoover on Monday, July 2nd from 8-10 a.m. with mass to follow. Graveside service immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church Building Fund.
