Barbara Ritch Jackson was born in Dothan, AL, on August 5, 1929. She moved to Birmingham upon her marriage to Philip Chappell Jackson, Jr. Barbara was a writer, publishing a cookbook, a memoir, and articles in The Birmingham News and The Washington Post. She was a broker of fine art and an avid sportswoman. Barbara was an early supporter and director of The Red Mountain Museum (McWane Science Center) and a member of the Women’s Committee of 100. She was beautiful, irreverent, endlessly fun and fiercely loyal. She was happiest when spending time with her family at the beach. She is survived by Philip, her husband of 64 years and the great love of her life, as well as their children Ellen, Chap and his wife Kathy, and Florence, and grandchildren Joslyn (Charlie) Dennis, Barbara Gage and Hatton Smith II, Marie, Anna, and Lauren Parsons, Alex and Katie Jackson.
After a private family graveside service, the family will receive visitors at Canterbury Methodist Church beginning at 10:00am, followed by a memorial service in the chapel at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Canterbury Methodist Foundation or McWane Science Center.
