
Bascom Thompson Hopson, age 83, of Birmingham passed away on October 11, 2017. Tom was born on February 24, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama. He is survived by his wife Nancy Stewart Hopson, daughter Katharine Hopson Blanton (Stan), sons Bascom Dorman Hopson and Frederick Thompson Hopson, sister Adrian Hopson McElroy, grandchildren Katharine Blanton Clinton (Josh), Martha Abbott Blanton, Savannah Sally Hopson and Rosco Scott Hopson and three great grandchildren and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Sally Abbott Hopson and daughter Frances Ingate Hopson, and by his parents, Bascom Hudmon Hopson and Katharine Thompson Hopson.
Tom attended public schools in Mountain Brook, Alabama and Fork Union Military Academy and served in the United States Navy. He was a successful broadcasting and advertising executive with WERC AM Radio and Sloan Major Advertising Agency, where he served as President of the agency.
Tom was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Country Club of Birmingham. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and tennis.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, in Birmingham on Friday, October 13 at 3 pm with a 2 pm visitation preceding the service. Serving as pallbearers are: Bascom Dorman Hopson, Frederick Thompson Hopson, Joshua Michael Clinton, John Robert McElroy III, William Shelton McElroy, and James Taylor McElroy. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or Encore Ministry at Canterbury Methodist Church
