Billie Doughty Holladay, daughter of Gradon N. Doughty and Myra D. Burroughs, passed away on October 8, 2018. She was predeceased by her parents, the great love of her life, her husband Dr. James Holladay, Jr., her dear sister Zackie D. Bosarge and her beloved dog Smokey II. She is survived by her brother Gradon Mac Doughty of Stone Mountain, Georgia and her nieces Beth Atchison (East Milton, Florida) and Chrissy L. Bosarge (Loxley, Alabama).
Billie was a born educator and a life-long learner. When she graduated from Birmingham-Southern College she was too young to get a teaching certificate so she immediately pursued her Master’s Degree in Education at Vanderbilt University. She later received her Doctorate in Education from The University of Alabama. When Billie and Jim moved to Charleston so that Jim could take a teaching position at the College of Charleston, Billie became the first female instructor at the Citadel and later served as Director of Elementary Education for the Charleston (South Carolina) School District. Upon their return to Alabama she served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Jefferson County School System. Billie was also a beloved and highly valued classroom teacher by her class at Robinson Elementary School whom she taught for three consecutive years under a trial program for gifted students. She often referred to those students as her children and remained in touch with them throughout her life.
Billie was a faithful member of Canterbury United Methodist Church and the Crawford Owen Sunday school class there. In her retirement she spent much of her time making calls and writing letters as part of the church outreach to members who were sick or hospitalized. Billie was a humble warm, compassionate, highly principled and dedicated human being. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 on Saturday October 20, 2018 at Canterbury United Methodist Church, followed by a memorial service at 11:00. Donations can be made in Billie’s name to Canterbury United Methodist Church or Birmingham-Southern College.
