It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Brian Ferrell, who left us the morning of December 20th, 2024, at the age of 54. Doug passed away in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by his loved ones.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Lorena; his stepchildren, Bobby, Joey, Alexandra, Natalia, and Olivia; his sister, Carmen (Margie); and his father, Marshall. Doug was a proud and devoted husband to Lorena, with whom he married on February 18th, 2024.
Doug was born in Kingstown, Jamaica and graduated from WA Berry High School in Hoover, Al. He worked as a structural engineer, where his most notable accomplishment was the design of the iconic roof of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. His professional life was marked by his commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and tireless work ethic. Doug's passion for engineering was matched only by his devotion to his faith and community.
Outside of his career, Doug was deeply involved in his local community as a volunteer sheriff's deputy. His love for service extended to his Christian faith, where he served faithfully in his church, always putting others' needs before his own.
Doug had many interests that brought him joy. He loved playing tennis, spending time at the shooting range, and staying active through tactical training. His enthusiasm for gun safety and protection was a defining aspect of his character, and he made sure those around him were educated in these areas as well. Doug's commitment to family and his community was rooted in his strong Christian beliefs. He often spoke of his love for God, the importance of protecting those he cared about, and the power of service.
Those who knew Doug would describe him as a devoted, loving, honorable, and committed man. He was outgoing, energetic, compassionate, and always ready to make life better for those around him. His sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him, and he had an incredible ability to lift people's spirits. Doug was an amazing stepfather to his children and a man of deep humility with a heart full of love for his family. His legacy of love, protection, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
A public memorial service in Doug's honor will be held at Church of the Highlands (4700 Highlands Way Irondale, Al 35210) on January 14th, 2025, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to heart.org or jeffcosheriffal.com (one of the many community outreach programs).
Doug's favorite verse was John 15:13, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends," and he lived this every day of his life.
Doug will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His unwavering love, devotion, and service to others are his enduring legacy.
