His great-grandchildren were also the love of his life, and he fervently and continuously prayed for their protection and safe arrival from the womb : Margot, Elizabeth, and Virginia McGarity; Walker and Anne Ellis Lathem; Ralph Bullock and her soon-to-be-born sisters, Geneveive and Holly. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Bloodworth (Luke).
Born in Birmingham, Alabama to William Courtenay Renneker, Sr. and Ann Mayfield Renneker, Courtenay grew up in Homewood, Alabama, and graduated from Shades Valley High School as SGA President. After graduation, he attended both Auburn University and Emory University, from where he received his undergraduate degree. He pursued his post graduate passion of medicine by attending and later graduating from the University of Alabama Medical School. His residency was interrupted by a call from the U. S. Army where he served as Captain during the Vietnam War, and subsequently received a Bronze Star. After returning home, he resumed his medical practice as a urologist which continued for over 62 years, at Baptist Medical Center, Princeton and briefly at Urology Centers of Alabama.
He was a member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church and was involved in a host of ministries. He was a man of many interests and hobbies to follow suit. Whether he introduced his family to his hobbies, like fishing, gardening, knitting, and golf, or they invited him to participate in theirs, through tennis, tap dancing, or drumming, Courtenay brought a joy and curious nature to any activity that he picked up. In addition to his many talents, he had a heart for serving others and did so by way of the Appalachia Service Project, visiting rural community health clinics, making house calls, and participating in prison ministry. He loved studying God's word and spreading the gospel to those around him. Most especially, he loved his family.
The family is grateful for those who so beautifully loved and served alongside them during Courtenay’s recent illness: Kennetta, Dannie, Diane, and Wayne.
