After graduation from Evergreen High School she attended Huntingdon College before entering the work force in Evergreen. It was in Evergreen that she met and married Herman Bolden, her husband of more than 70 years. She was a lifelong member of Evergreen First United Methodist Church.
Herman and Emmie lived in Evergreen two decades before his work took him to Birmingham. In their new location Emmie became active in church activities as well as civic and community affairs. Having had several victims of cancer in their immediate families Emmie and Herman developed a keen interest in cancer research and treatment. This effort began in 1976 and endures to this day.
