

George Gilbert Murphy, Jr. passed away after a brief illness on June 6, 2017 at the age of 91. He was born in the West End section of Birmingham, Alabama on July 24, 1925. He attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from West End High School. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the South Pacific June 21, 1943 through December 21, 1945. He graduated from Howard College and Birmingham School of Law. He married the former Peggy Joyce Tommie on December 29, 1951 and they were happily married until her death in 2014. He was employed with New York Life Insurance Company as an insurance agent until his retirement. He lived a long and full life remaining active until the very end. He became very involved with volleyball some time in the 1980's and was one of the founding members of the Birmingham Area Volleyball Association (BAVA). He remained passionate about the sport even when he could no longer play, continuing his involvement by coaching young girls in various clubs and most recently at Simmons Middle School. He and Peggy made their home in Homewood, Alabama for 62 years and he was very involved in the community.
He is survived by 3 daughters: Cynthia M. Paget, Melanie J. Murphy both of Homewood, AL, Sharon M. Browne of Northport, AL; 4 grandchildren: Melissa J. Browne (Victor Spezzini) of Birmingham, George Paget (Rachael) of Homewood, Rebecca B. Bonds (Matthew) of Decatur, AL, S. David Browne of Northport. He is also survived by 3 brothers: Eugene W. Murphy (Shirley) of Sherman Oaks, CA, Daniel O. Murphy (Barbara) of Madison, MS, and Terrence L. Murphy (Barbara) of Hoover, AL and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10-11 Monday June12, 2017 at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. Funeral will be at 11 at Valley Chapel followed by a reception. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
