

Mr. George Ferguson Strother passed away on March 29, 2017 in Charleston, SC. George was 92. George was born on January 31, 1925 in Birmingham, the son of Fleetwood Evans Strother and Katie Lou Ferguson Strother. He was a long time resident of Birmingham. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty Jean Tubb Strother and his twin brother Fleetwood Evans (Ed) Strother, Jr.
George served in the US Army at the end of WWII. After the war, George graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. George married Betty Jean Tubb on September 4, 1947 and then went back to pharmacy school at Howard College, now Samford University. After receiving his pharmacy degree George went into business with his Father-in-Law Proctor V. Tubb and they owned and operated Tubb’s Pharmacy for more than several decades until the mid- 1970’s. Tubb’s pharmacy was located on 20th Street and 8th Ave South.
George was not only a successful local business owner, but he was also an accomplished amateur photographer and wood worker. He often made and distributed hand carved wood canes to the elderly. George was a long time member of Canterbury United Methodist Church.
George is survived by his two children, George Scott Strother, married to Tracy Strother and Betty Janette Strother Gostin, married to Gary Gostin. George has two grandsons, Alan Gostin and David Gostin.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 1st, at Ridouts Valley Chapel, Homewood, Alabama with the viewing at 10:00AM and services at 11:00AM
