Grady DeVon Smith went to be with his Savior and Lord on February 8, 2026. Grady grew up in New Brockton, Alabama, and was co-valedictorian and class president of his high school class. At Auburn, he received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering. Auburn was a part of Grady and Jane’s lives from the very beginning. Their first date was to the Auburn - Alabama football game in 1967. One item that Grady really, really enjoyed was his Auburn class ring. Grady and Jane still have season tickets to Auburn football games, although they have not been able to go for some time. They have blessed their son and grandchildren with countless memories in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Grady’s entire professional career was with Alabama Power in Birmingham. After retirement, he was an active member of Alabama Power Energizers. Right after Grady retired in 2001, he started a part-time job which was at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Oxmoor Valley, where he worked as a starter/marshal. His “play job,” as Jane called it, lasted for one month short of twenty years, until his health journey began.
Grady was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher and usher coordinator, greeter, and did outreach for their Sunday School class.
Grady loved his family and enjoyed vacations, reunions, and, in fact, all times with his family and friends. He was especially blessed during the last five months of his life having Grady Jr. and his family next door. His family is grateful for the compassionate care Grady received from his caregivers, especially Maxine and Monikue, who were with him from the beginning, and from Baptist Hospice Montgomery.
Grady is preceded in death by his parents, Alonza Grady Smith, Jr., and Merle Butts Smith, and brother, Terry Smith. Grady is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Grimes Smith; son, Grady DeVon Smith, Jr. (Julia); four beloved grandchildren, Grady Jeremiah Smith, Richard Josiah Smith, Mary Elizabeth Jane Smith, and Timothy Lewis Smith; and brother, Tommy Smith (Marilyn); and a special group of nieces and nephews: Jill Cain (Chris), Joni Jones (Justin), Gareth Smith (Chandra), and Travis Smith (Marie). The nephews on Jane’s side are part of that special group: Glenn Ireland (Lynn), Trey Ireland (Margaret), and David Ireland (Michelle).
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood (1114 Oxmoor Rd, Birmingham, AL 35209) or Gateway Baptist Church in Montgomery (3300 Bell Road, Montgomery, AL 36116).
Visitation will be on Friday, February 13, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m.
