As a four year letterman, Greg led the team to an SEC Championship, graduating in 1979. Following graduation, Greg began a 19-year career with Nike, building friendships that remained influential and sustaining throughout his life. Greg lived a life led by his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was most recently active at Mountain Brook Community Church. Alabama sports, the beach and music were just a few of his passions and a lifelong love of golden retrievers; Max, his companion, always by his side. Above all, his greatest love was his family. Their happiness and successes in life brought joy beyond words.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Hart McElveen and survived by his loving wife, Cameron (Cammie), and family; his father H. Brooks McElveen; children, Natalie McElveen Day and her husband, Andrew, of Atlanta; Kurry McElveen Friedell and her husband, Birdie, of Orlando; Brooks Ashford McElveen of Birmingham. Also survived by his brother, David McElveen and his wife, Dana, of Jackson, MS and sister, Dawn McElveen Hunt, and her husband, David, of Columbia, SC. In recent years, Greg’s greatest love has been his granddaughters, Finley and Marin Day of Atlanta.
Greg led a vibrant, full and active life in spite of, and for many reasons due to, a diagnosis of juvenile diabetes at the age of 13. He welcomed and conquered each of life’s challenges with a focus and determination to be admired and honored. He demonstrated strength that we each hope we can find in ourselves when presented with a weight that seems unbearable. He loved and was loved and will be remembered as a loving father, husband, son, brother, and warrior.
Services will be held Monday, January 30th at Mountain Brook Community Church. Visitation at noon, followed by a service at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greg’s memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org.
