James E. Powell Jr.

POWELL, JAMES EUGENE JR. – Born on May 24, 1921 in Evergreen, Alabama, and died on April 3, 2015, in Birmingham, Alabama, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Eugene Powell Sr. and Dahlia Mae Brown Powell of Opelika, Alabama. He is survived by Marguerite Lane Powell, his wife of 71 years, and his three children, James Eugene Powell III (Barbara) of O’Fallon, Missouri, Thomas Marshall Powell (Lani) of Birmingham, and Pamela Elaine Britton (Michael) of Birmingham. He graduated from Emory University Law School and worked in the home office of Liberty National Life Insurance Company, from which he retired after 37 years as an assistant vice president. He served in the United States Army during World War II in France and Germany and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Worshipful Master of the Shades Valley Masonic Lodge and was awarded the Order of Silver Beaver for his service to the Boy Scouts of America. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 7, 2015, from 1:00 until 2:00 at First Baptist Church, on Lakeshore Drive, with funeral service to follow at 2:00.
