John Woods Frierson

surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, January 27, 2017, after a nineteen-year

battle with Parkinson's Disease.

John was born in El Paso, Texas, on December 7,1934, to John Woods Frierson and

Waldo Meyer Frierson. The family moved to Birmingham in 1935 when his father was

named President and Publisher of the Birmingham Post. John attended Avondale

school. The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and was a graduate of Vanderbilt

University.

Following his father in the newspaper field, John became Vice-President and Assistant

to the Publisher of the Sun Papers, and in 1970, joined Luckie-Forney Advertising.

A lifelong member of Independent Presbyterian Church, John was active in many civic

and social clubs and organizations including the Shades Valley Rotary Club of which he

was past-president, and a Paul Harris Fellow

John was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lynn Frierson Kennedy and his nephew,

Frank Thomas Kennedy, Jr. He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Kathryn

Mason Frierson; his sons John (Ginger) of Marietta, Ga., Richard (Amy) of Athens, Ga.

and Frederick (Tracy) of Roswell, Ga.; grandchildren Katie, Jack, Addie Lee, Kathryn

Anne, Charlie, Lilly and Mathew and was beloved by many other children who were

proud to call him "Grandfather" or "Uncle John". He is also survived by his brother,

Albert Meyer Frierson of Fort Myers, Fla., his cousin, Amie Boyd Marks of Shelbyville,

Tenn. and his nieces Debby K. Rosser (Jon) and Kathryn Kennedy, both of Birmingham;

Julie F. Freeman (Charles) of Gainesville, Fla. and Laura F. White (Ryan) of Edwardsville,

Visitation will be Monday, January 30, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel in

Homewood. A private family memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 31,

2017, at Independent Presbyterian Church Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Childrens' Fresh Air Farm of Independent Presbyterian Church,

or The Charity one's choice.
