

Arrangements under the dirJohna Plano Pitzer, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 in Birmingham, AL with her family at her side. Johna was born in New Castle, PA on April 1, 1940. She graduated from Union Township High School in 1957 and married Robert Clark Pitzer, also from New Castle, PA, on Feb. 5, 1959. The Pitzers relocated to Pass Christian, MS in 1972. Johna spent 33 years working for State Farm Insurance with agents Garland R. Belote, Jr. and Mike Meyers, retiring as an agency Office Manager. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, The Pitzers, along with Johna's mother, Norma M. Plano, relocated to Birmingham, AL. "Ma Ma" or "Maw Maw" Johna was devoted to her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their school and sporting activities. Handmade gifts of needlecrafts or baked goods were shared with so many people who will miss her thoughtful gestures. She was an avid seamstress and in recent years enjoyed a small business with her daughter, Wendy Pitzer Spratley, called Apron Strings in Homewood, AL. Gardening, word games, music and a great sense of humor were among other interests. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Pitzer, parents Stephen J. and Norma M. Plano, and her sister, Jane Hartzell Durkin. She is survived by her son Steven R. Pitzer (Debbie) of D 'Iberville, MS, and her daughter Wendy Pitzer Spratley (John) of Birmingham, AL; her grandchildren, Christina, Amy, Steven, and Michael Pitzer of D'Iberville, MS; Jane Elizabeth Spratley of Birmingham, AL; and a great grandchild, Brandon Pitzer of D'Iberville, MS; her nieces, Terry Lee and Leslie Rose(sons Zachary and Cayle) of Gulfport, MS. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 15 at 12:00pm at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1728 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209. Friends may call on family one hour prior to Memorial Service. Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209 is in charge of arrangements.
