On August 19, 2021 our beautiful, wise, funny Margaret began a celebration in her new life with Jesus – reunited with those she has missed for so long. She fought like a warrior to come back to us, but was victoriously healed and given her angel wings. Margaret Helen Phifer McCain was born in Oakman, Alabama January 16, 1927 to Loyd Phifer and Bertie Swindle Phifer. A beautiful life tapestry of so many places, experiences and stories, Margaret spent over half of her life in Homewood. She was a member of the Homewood Church of Christ and later attended the Palisades Church. She worked for many years in the food brokerage business and remains friends with many co-workers today. In 2002 she landed her favorite job ever as the office volunteer for Lori Leonard and the Homewood Chamber of Commerce. Many of us consider her the Queen of the Homewood Piggly Wiggly and to simply say she was an Alabama fan would be an understatement. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, George W. McCain, a WWII Air Force veteran and Purple Heart recipient, her siblings Carolyn Crane, Mary Prestridge, Maxine Quinn, Charles “Bud” Phifer and her nephews Ronnie Prestridge and Dusty Quinn. She is survived by her two daughters, Peggy Lee McCain (Gregory Graham) and Karen McCain Northcutt (Steve), her nephew Phifer Crane (Roxanne), nieces Sherry Prestridge Mudd (John), Marilyn Quinn Sills (Jimmy) and her “borrowed daughters” Brenda Falls Rothaermel (Fred) and Lori Leonard. A Celebration Service honoring Margaret will be held at Ridouts Valley Chapel-Homewood on Saturday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers are welcome, memorial donations include the Vietnam Wall Memorial(VVMF.org),Nature Conservancy(nature.org), St. Joseph’s Indian School (stjo.org). In Margaret’s memory we know that she would ask that you please take the time to send someone a smile that needs it, mend a broken bridge if at all possible, and take time now to tell folks that you love them. COVID safety precautions will be observed for the celebration service.
