

BURNS, Marilyn Joyce Pohlman, age 87, of Birmingham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 17, 2017. Visitation will be held from 10-12 a.m. on Thursday September 21st at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood with a graveside service afterwards at Elmwood Cemetery.
Marilyn was born on March 20, 1930, to the late Herman and Nell Martha Pohlman was affectionately known as “Bunny” and the youngest daughter in a family of 13 children. She grew up in Birmingham and married Reubin Paul Burns. Having been born into a large family, she loved having a family of her own. Always generous to others, she dressed and fed anyone, and was a great cook and seamstress. She made the best blackberry cobbler from wild berries, and she made matching doll dresses when she made her daughters’ clothes. Marilyn enjoyed decorating, shopping, singing, gardening, and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed her long career in fine jewelry, especially when she was helping young couples pick out the perfect engagement ring.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Reubin Paul Burns; her parents Herman and Nell Martha Pohlman; her brothers: Harry Pohlman, Jupe Pohlman, Charles Pohlman, Bill Pohlman, Floyd Pohlman, Robert Louis Pohlman; her sisters: Gaynell McBee, Marie Christian, Kathleen Hutto, Mary Louise Smoak, and Clara Hamilton. Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Pamela Burns Smith (Edward) of Birmingham, Paula Burns McEvoy (Bruce) of Atlanta, GA and Cynthia Marilyn Gironda of Page, AZ. Also left to treasure loving memories of their “Memaw” are her five grandchildren; Courtney Rubens-Day (Lance), and Jessica Smith of Birmingham, Gianni Gironda and Gabriella Gironda of Asheville, NC and Charlie Smith (Nykki Hafenbrack) of Brooklyn, NY; three great-grandchildren, Laylah Rubens-Day, Lancing Rubens-Day, and Paul McLaughlin, of Birmingham; her brother James Pohlman and many nieces and nephews.. We will all miss her smile, her lively stories, and her loving presence.
