Martha Spencer Hicks of Mountain Brook passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 26, 1935, to Clifford Morris and Velma McNutt Spencer.
A graduate of Ramsay High School, she studied at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was an avid reader and always made time for the outdoors. Being an exercise enthusiast, she was often seen on daily walks along the Jemison Trail, and through nearby neighborhoods and Villages. After retirement, she and Charles enjoyed many long weekends at their mountain cabin in Mentone, hiking through the woods, swimming, and canoeing in Little River. The last years of her life were spent at Kirkwood by the River, where she was blessed by the dedication and commitment of their exceptional staff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and by her brother, Clifford M. (Burr) Spencer, Jr. She is survived by her three sons, John Morris Hicks (Lisa) of Birmingham, Stephen Lee Hicks (Susan) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Andrew Spencer Hicks of Birmingham, and by four grandchildren, Destin Hicks, Emily Chapdelaine (Andrew), Thiery Hicks, and William Hicks.
