

COOK, MARY FRANCES GAMBLE Mary Frances Gamble Cook died on July 11, 2012 at the age of 98. She was a resident of Saint Martins in the Pines for 23 years where she brought joy and love to residents and staff. She was born to missionaries, Dr. Foster K. Gamble and Beatrice Kirk Gamble in Songdo Korea in 1913 and lived there for 13 years. She graduated from Birmingham Southern College and worked for the Alabama Power Company, the Birmingham Sunday School Council, and Camp Winnataska. She was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church for 67 years. She served as Director of the Children's Division for 19 years and designed the Sunday School Building which, to her joy, became part of Cornerstone School. She was a member and President of the Bell Class, President of the UMW and wrote and published the book, A History of Woodlawn Methodist Church. She was active in civic work serving as a member and President of the Woman's Club of Birmingham, Just-A-Mere Garden Club, the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, and other groups. She was an artist, gardener, Sunday school teacher, and collector. She was, most of all, a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband Liston Cook, sister Beatrice Jenkins, brother Dr. Allen Gamble and brother Dr. John Gamble. She is survived by her sister Grace Covington and sister-in-law Edith Gamble; children Foster Cook and Dr. Joe Allen Cook; daughters-in-law Rowena Macnab and Patricia Cook; beloved grandsons Jon Allen Cook, Alex Cook, and Nathan Cook; beloved granddaughter Dr. Erin Cook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 16th with a private interment at Elmwood Cemetery followed by a celebration of her life at Independent Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM. Family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor.
