Mary was born July 23, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Randolph Taylor, originally from Winchester, Kentucky, lived in Columbus, Mississippi. She was raised on the family farm in Columbus; however, the family frequently traveled to Kentucky and Minnesota, often spending many months visiting relatives. Mary had very fond memories of all three homes. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women) and worked as the church secretary for First United Methodist Church. She met her husband, Sam Alexander Lowery, in Columbus, as he traveled to town for business. They married in 1957, and she moved to Birmingham.
She was a wife, mother and homemaker. As a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, she was part of the John Wesley Sunday School class for almost 60 years. She was active in the United Methodist Women and involved in many Church Circles. She was a member of the Princess Sehoy Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Valley Brook Garden Club. Mary enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and golf. She will be remembered for her cheerful smile, contagious laugh and as a sweet, lovely lady.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam, her twin sister Patty Anne Taylor, her brother Robert Pendleton Taylor, II and his wife Catherine.
She leaves daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. William Mudd Hiden (Pat) and daughter Mrs. Jane Lowery Christopher, all of Birmingham, as well as grandchildren, Eleanor Taylor Christopher (Birmingham), William Mudd Hiden, Jr. (Birmingham), Caroline Jane Christopher (Nashville), and Taylor Gore Hiden (Washington, D.C.). Also, she leaves nephews, William Randolph Taylor II (Becky) and Robert Pendleton Taylor, III (Renee).
Her family is grateful for her wonderful caretakers for the past eight years whom include Cindy Watson, Vestee Dunlap, Inell Lawrence, Gigi Carradine and also Charonda Clark as well as all the caring staff of Kirkwood by the River. They were her closest friends as well as family to her. She loved them dearly.
Any memorials may be made to Canterbury United Methodist Church or Kirkwood by the River.
