Monroe Floyd Vest, Jr., 97, of Birmingham, Ala., was born June 2, 1918, and died peacefully on August 28, 2015. An embodiment of “the greatest generation,” he attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later Auburn University) until leaving to serve the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. Stationed in England with the 305th Bombardment Group, he met his wife of 63 years, Hazel Aris of Liverpool. Upon returning to Birmingham, Floyd worked more than 30 years for Motion Industries, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Well into his retirement, Floyd was an avid bowler, an enthusiast in the advent of personal computers and the internet, a 60-year season ticket holder to Auburn football, and a beloved member of the “K-Korner” Auburn baseball fan section. Floyd was a faithful member of the Church of the Ascension in Vestavia Hills. He will be remembered by family, friends and colleagues for his quick wit, strong opinions, and loving spirit. He spent his final months with his family and in the loving care of the staff at Arbor Springs Health and Rehab Center in Opelika, Ala. Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Hazel and is survived by his daughter Glenda Vest Parrish and her husband Jake; his son Floyd Vest, III and his wife Teresa Peters Vest; grandchildren Andy Parrish and Scott Parrish; and great-grandson Matthew Vest Parrish, brother in law Skip Ariss, niece Diane, and nephew Martin.
