Nancy Davies Beeler passed away on May 17, 2025 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Nancy was born in Birmingham, AL on June 25, 1948 to Martha Battle Davies and Benjamin Davies, Jr. She was a loving wife to John Hinkley Beeler, Jr., and a wonderful mother to Laura Beeler Vetter (Roland) of Richmond, Virginia, Elizabeth Beeler Strong (David Reiné) of Los Angeles, California and John Hinkley Beeler, III (Aften) of Baltimore, Maryland. She was an incredibly proud grandmother to Elizabeth Davies (Day) Vetter and twins, Lucia Marie (Lucy) Reiné and Laine Davies Reiné, all of whom adored their Shugs. Nancy leaves behind a brother, Benjamin Davies, III, her sister-in-law, Dorothy Beeler Stair (Caesar), six nephews and their families, numerous cousins and many wonderful friends, all of whom were the center of her world.
At an early age, Nancy developed a fun and competitive spirit that was woven into all aspects of her life. She was a cheerleader at Shades Valley High School, where she graduated in 1966, always willing the teams to victory. Nancy continued her studies at the University of Alabama and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, graduating in 1970.
Having met in high school, John and Nancy married in June of 1972 in Birmingham. They began their lives together in Nashville, where she taught elementary school, before moving back home to Birmingham.
Nancy excelled in everything she did, intertwining her lively spirit into relationships with her family, friends and everyone she met along the way. She played competitive tennis with USTA for over twenty years, always displaying her grit and determination at the net. John immediately knew the kind of day she had on the court as soon as she walked through the door.
That same infectious spirit was evident later in life, as well. From cheering on her grandchildren, to avoiding sand traps on the golf course or playing duplicate bridge at the Birmingham Bridge Club, Nancy's joy for life remained strong. She loved gardening and arranging flowers, sharing her talent with the Altar Guild at Canterbury United Methodist Church. Nancy was also a member of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club, the Triangle Garden Club and the Cambridge Book Club. Nancy had a strong faith and loved her Thursday morning Bible club, the Crawford Owen Sunday School class at Canterbury, as well as Sunday mornings at Hurtsboro Methodist Church down at the farm.
Nancy will be missed by all who knew her, but her bright spirit will carry on through her family and friends as they share her indelible joy for God and life with others.
A memorial service will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow at The Country Club of Birmingham. The graveside service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to one of the following charities:
Encore Ministry (c/o Canterbury United Methodist Church, 350 Overbrook Road, Birmingham, AL 35213), The Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation (504 RXR Plaza, Uniondale, NY 11556), or your favorite charity.
