
Catherine Patricia “Patsy” Heinsberger Gaskin, died peacefully at home January 28, 2013. She was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, to Edward and Catherine Heinsberger. She was educated at Women’s College, University of North Carolina and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina. She taught multiple grades in Lumberton and Fayetteville, North Carolina schools. She met Thomas A. Gaskin whom she married in January 1969. They spent most of that first year in Lophuri, Thailand where Tom was assigned as surgeon to the 46th Special Forces Company. It was an adventure. They lived for two years in Pensacola, Florida, and then moved to Birmingham, Alabama.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years Thomas Gaskin; her son Alan and grandson Campbell, both of whom she was very proud.
After years of guidance and inspiration by the Reverend Mr. Rusty Goldsmith at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, she was drawn back to her Methodist roots by the teaching skills of Dr. Crawford Owen at Canterbury United Methodist Church. His class has been a source of spiritual comfort for her for two decades.
She was a member of the Perky Planters Garden Club, Vanities and Charades Dance Club. She loved to dance and participated in adult tap dancing, ballroom dancing, swing, western, Cajun and shag. Her longevity was enabled by the expert care of Dr. Max Austin, Dr. Kirby Bland, Dr. John Carpenter, Dr. Paula Rookis, Dr. Stan Faulkner and many others.
The family will receive friends on January 30, 2013 beginning at 9:30 am with the funeral service following at 11:00 am at Canterbury United Methodist Church with
Dr. Morgan and Dr. Goldsmith.
In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Birmingham’s Animal Adoption and Rescue Center (BAARC), 7512 Parkway Drive, Leeds, AL 35094, Canterbury United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
