

He was born on November 29, 1922 in Belmont, N.C. to the late
Luther Wadell Chapman and Muriel Elizabeth Saunders Chapman
and lived most of his young life in Maiden, N.C.
Mr. Chapman was a graduate of Wake Forest College in 1943
with a Bachelor of Science degree and was a member of
Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. He enlisted in the United States Army
in August 1943 and earned the rank of Sargent. As a decorated
World War II veteran he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart
during his service in Europe until December 1945. In 1948 he graduated
with a degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State
University and began his career at Bell South Telephone Company
until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Chapman was an active member of
Vestavia United Methodist Church and participated in many
civic clubs and organizations in the Birmingham area.
Mr. Chapman was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Inez Gaddy and Suzzie Tomlin,
wife Martha Frances Chapman, mother of his children,
and later wife Leanora Sheldon Chapman. He is survived
by his two children: Elizabeth Kate Chapman Craft and John Paul Chapman (Laura);
four grandchildren Mitchell Craft (Kari), Libby Erickson (Cavin),
Patrick Chapman (Katie) and Rebecca LeGault (Chandler); and three great grandchildren
The family will receive friends at Ridout’s Valley Chapel on
Saturday, January 27, 2018 beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a
Celebration of Life service following at 2:00 pm.
