

Raymond "Alan" Grier, M.D. age 61, passed away on July 4, 2014 at UAB Hospital after suffering a head injury from a fall at his home. He was born October 22, 1952 to Morris Wilson and Pearl Bennett Grier. He was a long time member of the Independent Presbyterian Church, and his love and deep passion for music contributed to being a devoted member of the IPC Choir for thirty-two years. At the time of his death, Dr. Grier had practiced family medicine for thirty years and was currently practicing at Seale Harris Clinic at St. Vincent's. He knew his fate was to be a physician since the age of five. He graduated from Cullman High School in 1970 and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from UAB, followed by a medical degree at UAB School of Medicine.
Survivors include his brother, James Garland Grier (Patty) of Cullman; two nieces: Casey Grier, also of Cullman, and Ashley Grier White (Joshua) of Huntsville; his girlfriend, Shirley Loewen of Birmingham and special friend, Cindy Young of Huntsville; and his beloved rescued pets.
Funeral services for Dr. Grier will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Independent Presbyterian Church, officiated by Dr. Conrad Sharps and Rev. Lucy Turner. The employees of Seale Harris Clinic are honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to IPC Music and Fine Arts, 3100 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL 35205-1408.
