The son of Annie Lucy and James Wingfield Wills, Reid was born and raised in the small town of Washington, Georgia. After serving in the United States Army, he married the love of his life, Josephine Broome. Together they had three sons, Ed, Steve, and Nash.
He attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business Finance and remained a life long fan of the Bulldogs. After a long career as a trust officer, he retired from Regions Bank where he had developed a reputation for integrity and compassion as he guided people through the difficult subjects of estate planning and trusts.
Family was always a priority to Reid. Once when asked the key to successful parenting, his reply was “availability”. Even after helping to successfully raise his own children, following retirement, Reid went out of his way to form a special bond with each of his grandchildren. He would keep them when they were sick, show up for every sporting event, and make sure they arrived on time wherever they were needed. The expression of love he shared with his grandchildren, “one finger for Granddaddy” conveys a love that transcends spoken words.
Above everything else, Reid Wills’ life was dedicated to serving Jesus Christ through his daily witness and through his servant leadership at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. At MBBC, he served as a life Deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. However, the one ministry that he is most widely associated with at MBBC is his 44-year faithful service to the Sound Committee. Reid became a fixture in the sound booth at MBBC, serving the church in this capacity for multiple services per week as well as weddings and any other special events.
In every facet of his life, Reid Wills displayed a humble and gentle love that will continue to shine through everyone whose soul he has shaped. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Josephine; sons, Ed (Carole), Steve (Beth), and Nash (Melissa); five grand children, Debra Saunders (Daniel), Ben (Sammi), Thomas, Jacob, and Natalie.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MBBC Living Nativity Camel Fund.
