

He was preceded in death by his wife Aleta Dumas Schanbacher, his father Orville W. Schanbacher, his mother Ella Rose Schanbacher, his sister Mary Ann Starke and her husband Walter, his brother Orville W. Schanbacher Jr. and his wife Eugenia Grubb Schanbacher all of Birmingham, Al.
He is survived by his children, Robert Wilhelm Schanbacher and wife Sondra of Oregon City, Oregon. Mary S. Jackson and husband Frank of Atlanta Georgia; grandchildren, Virginia, Zachariah, and Robert Jackson, Ella, and lan Schanbacher, and his sister; Mrs. Jo Ann Schanbacher Miree, of Mt. Brook, Alabama and several nieces and nephews.
He graduated from John Carroll High School and attended Auburn University where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity. He served in the United States Army 1" Cavalry, 2nd Armored Division; during the Berlin and Cuban Crises. Bob returned to the Birmingham area in 1964 and started his career with The Kmart Corp. He served throughout the Southeast in store management and supervision. In 1984 he was promoted to Kmart's International Office in Troy, Michigan where he served the remaining years of his career.
Robert and Aleta retired to the Orange Beach, Al. area. During his life he enjoyed water sports, boating, and fishing. He helped in establishing The Orange Beach UMC and served as a Trustee for several years. He and Aleta moved back to the Mountain Brook area and have enjoyed living in Orange Beach and Mountain brook. Both Robert and Aleta were members of Highlands UMC, where they were married February 4, 1967. They shared the great adventure of life and love with one another for 50 years. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers especially Carmiller Austin.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at Ridout's Valley Chapel, beginning at nine o'clock in the morning with the funeral service following at ten o'clock in the morning. Graveside services will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
