
Dr. Roy Franklin Roddam, 89, of 1529 Ashley Wood Circle, Vestavia Hills, died December 27, 2024. Dr. Roddam was born April 9, 1935 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of the late Marvin Seay Roddam and Mildred Franklin Roddam. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Padgett Roddam, his children, Roy Franklin Roddam, Jr., Renee Roddam Richesin, and John Randolph Roddam, and his grandchildren, Jane Anne Roddam Gorham, Julia Guice Roddam, John Franklin Roddam, Robert Reid Richesin and Ross Roddam Richesin.
Dr. Roddam attended Woodlawn High School where he was the class president and hosted a children’s radio program. After graduation, he attended the University of Alabama, earning his bachelor degree in 1955. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He attended the Medical College of Alabama, graduating in 1959. He did his internship and residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center and became board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, geriatrics, and nuclear medicine. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1964, earning the rank of captain. After the assassination of President Kennedy, he was the flight surgeon who flew back with the cabinet from Hawaii. He married Joanne Padgett Roddam in 1965. He practiced medicine in the Baptist Health system, then at UAB Medical Center until his retirement in 2001. Due to his love of people, he came out of retirement to take care of the health of the inmates at Donaldson prison in Bessemer until 2018.
Roy is remembered by his family for his love of learning, reading, playing golf and bridge, the Alabama Crimson Tide athletics, and especially his devotion to Jesus Christ. There will be hundreds of people in heaven rejoicing over his homecoming and thanking him for sharing with them the good news of the gospel.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, December 29th in the chapel at Briarwood Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m.
