

Sam Sook A. Song, mentor, pillar of support, devoted Christian passed away at home in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of ninety on December 7, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jin Hun, two sisters, a brother and her daughter, Youn Joo Song. She is survived by her daughters, Hyun Joo Kim (Hoon) of Seoul, Korea, Eun Joo Meriwether (John) and Young Joo Flynn (Daniel) of Birmingham, Alabama; her grandchildren, Ju Yup Kim (Hamyung), Ju Hang Kim (Jin), Eun Hae Kim (Miguel), Katherine Meriwether Duncan (Stephen), John S. Meriwether, III (Jessica), Rachel Prevost Meriwether, April Marie Flynn, and Kelly Alyssa Flynn; and ten great grandchildren.
Sam Sook was born in Chadong, South Korea on May 10, 1927. Raised in the Buddhist faith, Sam Sook converted to Christianity in the mid-1970’s. She became a devoted Christian and tirelessly prayed to the Lord for support and sustenance every day. Her greatest desire was for her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren to be devoted followers of Christ.
A consummate homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Sam Sook provided a comfortable, warm home to her family. She deeply influenced the lives of her children and grandchildren by providing totally unselfish love and devotion. Her family and friends were treated to the very best Korean cuisine through her skill as a cook, preparing the most complex dishes from memory without even the slightest reference to any written recipe. She sewed many articles of clothing for her family, many times by hand, all perfectly stitched. Sam Sook was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A true and faithful servant of the Lord, Sam Sook was at all times guided by her abiding faith in the Lord. She was a true gift to all who knew her.
Arrangements are being handled by Ridout’s Valley Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209 at 3:00 on Sunday, December 10, 2017. Visitation will follow at Ridout’s Valley Chapel until 5:00. A family graveside memorial service will be held at Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw, Alabama at 2:00 on Monday, December 11, 2017. The family requests that donations be made to Grace of Cross Church, 1380 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills, Alabama, 35216.
