Sara Womack Self, age 96 of Hoover, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018. She was born on February 8, 1922 to the late William F. and Sarah Craig Womack. Sara’s first job was as a secretary at the First Presbyterian Church for 4 years. After that she started working at Goodyear as a secretary and Dick was working in the service department. She and another girl were in a booth having lunch and the restaurant was packed, there was 2 cute guys waiting on a table and standing near them, so Sara asked them if they wanted to sit with them. Dick was later known for saying that Sara “picked him up”. Dick had a silver dollar he carried with him when he went off to war. When Sara and Dick were first married and didn’t have a lot of money, Dick would borrow a dollar from work and place the silver dollar in the back of the cash register, when he had the money he would retrieve his silver dollar and pay back the money. Sara had the silver dollar made into a pendent and wore it as a necklace. Before Sara met Dick she dated Putt. He used to take his shirts to Sara’s mothers dry cleaners. He drove an ambulance. One day as he drove by he saw Sara and she gave him the hand signal to call him and he did. They started going out when Sara was 20 years old and Putt was 1 ½ years older. They would ride the streetcar on their dates. Sara’s mother sent her to stay a month with Aunt Bee Bee in North Carolina. After a week Sara found out that Putt was leaving for the war. She returned home to see him off. Putt did not ask her to wait. In July 2011 after 72 years and both of their spouses had died they reconnected. In August of that year, a granddaughter Robin took them on their first date to the Bright Star in Bessemer. They sat in back seat of the car next to each other kissing on the way to the restaurant. They date for 3 years until Putt went to be with the Lord.
