

December 3rd, 1911 – August 8th 2015 of Bessemer passed away at the age of 103. Mrs. Brown was born in Conway, Arkansas, and is a graduate of Hendrix College (voted Distinguished Alumni) and The University of Illinois. She enjoyed a long professional career in library science with positions at Alabama College, Montevallo, Alabama, U.S. Army Air Force Tactical School and at the Combat-Intelligence Four-Engine School, both at Maxwell Field, Alabama. She enjoyed a long career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, starting as Head Cataloger and Assistant Librarian to full Professor of Library Science and Director, Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences 1973-77. In 1973 Mrs. Brown was elected President of The National Medical Library Association. A member of The Women’s Committee of 100 of Birmingham and charter member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, she was an accomplished musician, playing her violin with various local groups. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband Sterling Felan Brown and is survived her son Sterling Russell Brown (Mary), grandchildren, Sterling Russell Brown, Jr, of Birmingham, AL, Christopher Joseph Brown (Christiane), of Seattle, WA, Joshua Cole Brown (Jackie), of Seattle, WA, and Sarah Ashley Brown of Berlin Germany, her great grandson Killian and sister Virginia Cole Johnston, of Wilkesboro NC. Services will be Saturday August 22nd at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, Homewood, AL. Visitation is from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service with internment at Elmwood Cemetery.
