Sheard is preceded in death by her grandparents Ellen Sheard of Batley, Yorkshire England and John McMurchy of Brampton, Ontario, Canada and Dr. and Mrs. James M. Mason, Jr., and by her father and mother, Dr. James M. Mason, III and Gladys McMurchy , and by her brother Clive McMurchy Mason, all of Birmingham. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Thomas M. McCulley (Tommy), children Ellen McCulley Faust (Stephen) and James Mason McCulley (Mason) of Birmingham, and Lacey McCulley Watson (Robert) of San Antonio, Texas. Her surviving grandchildren which she adored and who affectionately called her ISH include McCray, Lee Lee and Lovelace Faust, and Emmy and T Watson.
The family is especially grateful for the loving care provided by Andrea Rutledge and her special team of care givers.
Sheard attended Brooke Hill (Altamont) high school, St Mary's College and graduated from The University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She worked for both Alabama Power and the Children's Hospital post college.
Sheard, a most beautiful person inside and out, was a true servant all her life with special love for St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church, Linley Heflin, Ballet Guild's Ball of Roses, and the O'Neal Library, among many. Her heart was in helping people, particularly to make outsiders feel welcome and included. She truly enjoyed reading, supporting patriots and knitting. If you were fortunate enough to receive one of her baby sweaters, treasure it, as they are prized. Her true joy was spending time in Canada with family on Lake Muskoka where she spent almost every summer of her entire life and loved the cold-water swimming and smores over the fire with the kids and grandkids.
A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, May 25 at 2:30 pm at St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church located at 1910 12th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205 with a celebration to follow at The Country Club of Birmingham.
Donations may be made to St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church or to St. Vincent's Hospital, where both her grandfather and father served as chief of surgery for many years, and where she entered this life.
Heavenly Father, we give you thanks and praise for Sheard's life on earth and for her new and everlasting life with You in heaven.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the McCulley family.
