“Big O,” as he was affectionately known by all who knew and loved him, was born in Lebanon, TN on July 27, 1949. He was the son of the late M. Haber Vickers and Katherine Major Vickers. He attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and earned a degree in Business Administration with concentrations in management and finance.
Big O is survived by his wife, Marsha, of nearly 50 years and his children Tal Vickers (Julie) and grandchildren Sims (Caroline), Dobbson (Caroline) and Sage, Lelie Wright (Trent) and grandchildren Trent Jr., Ella Kate and Brooks, Joni Kniseley (Chris) and grandchild Emily annd Maggie Schmidt (Caleb) and grandchildren Hattie, Judah and Joshua.
Big O enjoyed tremendous success from a professional perspective. He was the Chairman and CEO of BHT Resources, a position he stewarded well for almost 40 years. Over the course of his tenure, BHT Resources grew operations across not only Alabama but Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee as well and provided services to over 17,000 wholesale and retail business customers while always remaining committed to corporate values such as prompt service and fair prices. Beyond his day to day responsibilities with BHT Resources he was remarkably attuned to strategic real estate developments and projects as well as graciously giving of his time to sit on both professional and charitable committees and boards.
But for all of the success that Big O had professionally, it was those who had the privilege to engage with him personally that stand as the greatest testament to his legacy.
Big O loved unconditionally, laughed infectiously and gave generously. If you are reading this obituary, there’s a strong likelihood you’ve either personally benefitted from his love, laughter or generosity or you know someone who has.
Though he earned and experienced tremendous material blessings in this world, he was always both humble to acknowledge where those blessings came from and happy to return those blessings to those that he could.
He will be sorely missed by his family and his friends. But his love is forever imprinted on those who have most deeply experienced it and while his family will deeply grieve him, they will not do so absent of hope. Above everything else Big O knew his Maker and Redeemer. At the very end, he was able to say, “I’m ready.” The rest of us might not be but Owen Vickers’s life represented one that was ready to enter into glory.
Big O’s visitation will take place at “The Hideout” (818 Maple Street Birmingham, Al. 35210) on Sunday, April 19th, 2026 from 2:00-5:00pm and his Celebration of Life service will take place at Church of the Highlands (Grant’s Mill location) on Monday, April 20th at 11:30.
